The Thrill of playing Gershwin
Recently, I have been enthralled with the music of Gershwin. I have listened to the recordings of his music, seen his music played at the symphony, and learned some of his pieces for piano. This interest compelled me to learn Rhapsody in Blue over the summer. It was an enriching experience because it was my first experience delving into a longer piece. With immense effort, I learned it and continue to enjoy striving to perfect it.
This fall, I also learned Gershwin’s Prelude No. 1; it is so fun to play because it features large jumps and is very dynamic in such a short song. Overall, I have enjoyed learning Gershwin. Often times when I play or listen to his pieces, I picture myself walking down the main streets of New York during the Jazz Age.
